El Debarge Talks Drugs, Prison & Second Chance

El Debarge talks about picking up a crack pipe at age 25 and not putting it down until 22 years later. He discusses getting “untrapped” after spending 13 months in prison, and recounts what the first thing he did when he got out of prison was. He didn’t do any writing while he was locked up, but spent his days praying, exercising and eating. El admits that he was the last one in his family to start using drugs, and warns about the perils of experimenting:

El Debarge recalls how he became the lead singer of Debarge. He admits that while recording his latest single, “Second Chance” he broke down in tears during the first verse:

  2. You are a very, very talent interviewer. Too many young women and a few young men have blown their interviewer with legendary singer El Debarge focusng on the obvious: his ‘light skin’ and good looks, his amazing voice, his stint in prison and his drug addiction. Yes, you touched on these things but in such a meaningful and professional manner. You gave us a chance to know the man behind the voice (and good looks) and most importantly asked questions of substance. Thank you.

    • Oh, the next time you interview him, I’m curious to know if he intends to attempt to mend his relationship with his children. Having family and/or friends who have battled drug addiction, I’ve recently come to better understand their period of struggle was like being in a time zone that too froze their brain. Coming out is like waking up and having to deal with real life but in the future. I did read somewhere that he is considering a reality show that details his struggles then and now, i.e. like what he is doing to stay clean, etc. I too hope it touches upon his ‘desire’ to do right by the children that got caught up in his addiction and the women (mothers) ignorance in having babies with a person still in their addiction and too lost to become somebody’s father. We do all have to take ownership of our actions.
