The Houston born Kirko Bangz returns full throttle with The Progression 2 (A Young Texas Playa) with 13 tracks for easy listening. The mixtape offers a lot of Kirko “sing-rapping” for the majority of the project similar to what we normally hear from Drake -radio hits on deck. However, the “sing-raps” halt on “Touch The Sky” as Kirko, sans auto-tune, addresses his artistry and judgements from critics and fans alike: “rap critics debatin’ you, until you hit home on some sh*t that they relatin to/then they like damn that ni**a go hard ‘B’/But last week they said that you was soft going R&B.”

The Weeknd returns with Echoes of Silence, a nine-track effort which is the final mixtape in the Balloons Trilogy.

Echoes of Silence immediately grabs your attention with, “D.D”, a remake of Michael Jackson’s “Dirty Diana.” The song feels erie and ominous as you truly understand the struggle of a man trying to run home to his lady but falls weak and stays out instead -darn you Diana. As for features, Juicy J appears “Same Old Song” but does not rap, he rants about bringing $30,000 to the strip club, around the 5 minute mark, amusing.

Echoes of Silence maintains the same energy heard on the two previous projects House of Balloons & Thursday. Be prepared to hear confessions from a forlorn young man trying to figure out life, love, and the dangers of beautiful women.

Freddie Gibbs dropped his new mixtape Cold Day In Hell on Halloween. The Gary, Indiana native spits hard on his newest offering, the follow up to 2010’s Str8 Killa No Filla. Gibbs was signed to Interscope in the mid 2000’s and was subsequently dropped because of label politics. He rebounded in ‘09 with midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik and appeared on the XXL Freshmen cover. Gibbs signed with Young Jeezy’s CTE earlier this year and released an EP with Statik Selektah titled Lord Giveth, Lord Taketh Away in June. Never one to hold his tongue, Freddie always keeps it real and provides that real gangster music.
